28 antique dealers in one historic location
Those who remember driving along Mayfield’s Maitland Road in the 80’s, may have vague memories of a dishevelled and derelict building, known only as the Coliseum. The building remained like this for much of the decade, until owners George and Bronwyn poured some much needed love back into her, to the delight of Hunter Hunter and all vintage shopping fans.
Much of the restoration inspiration came from Brownyn. Between George and herself, and some help from George’s son, they undertook the massive job of bringing the grand old lady back to life. They worked on it 7 days a week for 2 years! In 2004, quite appropriately, the Coliseum was re-opened as an antique store with adjoining cafe, Vincents, and has never looked back.
A decade on and the Coliseum has become a thriving hub of antiques and collectables with 28 separate dealers, each having their own dedicated space in which to display their unique collections.
There’s no one stand out, with each of the dealers buying from different sources. This makes for an eclectic and fascinating shopping experience and ensures people from all walks of life come browsing - grandmothers buying gifts, families buying furniture and young people buying curious keepsakes for themselves.
One cannot visit the Coliseum without mentioning the mighty radio wall, George’s crowning glory. George has been collecting radios since he was 15, and owned his own electronics business and television workshops for many years. George continues to restore radios, along with 1960’s stereos and record players, which are back in vogue again. George claims that he now has so many parts that he could repair every radio in the country. The wall is more than just a museum piece. Those wanting to purchase a piece of radio history come into the Coliseum, pick the radio of their choice which George will restore for them.
Next time you’re driving along Maitland Road, be sure to drop in to delight in the Coliseum’s history, enjoy a coffee at Vincents and marvel in the hard work that has gone into bringing this spectacular building back to life.
