Bolton Street Pantry

Good Coffee. Good Food. Good Times

Is this Newcastle CBD’s go-to spot for all things breakfast, brunch, lunch, and of course – coffee?

The somewhat iconic venue in the heart of town, Bolton St Pantry, has had quite the refresh with every detail, from their menu all the way through to their branding; it’s Bolton St Pantry, but new and improved!

Founded in 2015, owner, John Casey, took over the long-time favourite in August 2020, with the venue recently celebrating 12-months under new hands! To celebrate, the specialty café launched its re-brand alongside their incredible new food, drink, and atmospheric offering.

“It’s been a challenge the past 12-months, but I’m pretty proud of where the venue is at now and what we’ve accomplished as a team. We’ve really pulled together a whole new atmosphere with the new menu, the furniture, the branding; we’ve thought of everything,” John said.

Having grown up in Newcastle, John has quite the soft spot for our seaside town. Following a good 5+ years in Sydney bouncing around the café scene, he gained unparalleled coffee experience before deciding it was a no-brainer to come back here to bring with him his ideas to inject into his own venue.

“I wanted to start something on my own and create something cool, so I thought why not bring all of my ideas and experience back to Newcastle. I want to bring something fresh and exciting to the Newcastle brunch scene.”

The refreshed foodie joint boasts a modern industrial style with exposed concrete walls, minimal furniture, moody lighting, open-plan design, and refined colour palette with touches of green throughout.

“We’ve gone for a more minimal, sleek, and clean look. That is very much in line with everything we do in here even down to our coffee and food. We believe that the quality speaks for itself. We’re not trying to overcomplicate things, instead, we keep it simple but done well.”

Checking out the menu you can see why the venue has become a crowd favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. Brought to us by Chef Ryan, the menu changes seasonally with Bolton St Pantry’s signature dishes alongside the usual brunch favourites, with a Bolton St Pantry twist, available year-round.

“Chef Ryan has come up from Melbourne. He's got the same vision as me in that we're wanting to bring something fresh to Newcastle and bring BSP to the forefront of the local cafe scene.”

So, whilst you can of course find your usual favourites, like the Bolton Eggs Benny, it’s eggs benedict but elevated! Complete with slow-braised ham hock, fresh eggs courtesy of Local Yolk and house-ferments to top it off!

“We’ve really thought out each and every one of our dishes. They’re simple yet effective with the quality of the ingredients speaking for themselves.”

Other signature dishes worth adding to your ‘to taste’ list include the French Toast served with poached pear, mascarpone bulee, citrus curd, fresh berries, pistachio praline, and house maple; and the Chilli Scrambled Eggs with bacon, miso mayo, and fried shallots served on sourdough.

“The Chili Scrambled Eggs have been a real winner. It’s traditionally a winter dish but we’ll keep it on there because everyone loves it, and it really has been selling like crazy.”

The Bolton St Pantry team pride themselves on fresh, local, and in-season menus. Think simple, healthy, and most importantly tasty! SO, of course, you can order the Aussie classic, like their Smashed Avo which comes complete with smashed avocado, pickled onion, feta cream, blistered cherry tomato, and lemon.

Now, we can’t talk about Bolton St Pantry without touching on their epic coffee offering. Which is exactly that, an offering! Besides their incredibly foodie-focussed offering, the crew pours Single O Coffee Roaster’s Reservoir blend, the only venue in Newcastle to do so.

“It is much lighter than the traditional dark blends, however, we love it because of how sweet, smooth, and vibrant it is!

“We do also showcase a lot of roasters from around the country and particularly a lot of Newcastle roasters for both our espresso of the day and our filter coffees. We aim to have an unbiased approach and simply showcase coffees we really want to try and drink ourselves.”
