A life-long love obsession with flowers all started in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens for Melissa Hart. Working in the Sydney CBD at the time, the gardens became Mel’s regular lunchtime breather breaks from the corporate world.

Little did Mel know that it was these visits that would one day provide the inspiration to open her very own floral shop called Blooms on Darby. Blooms on Darby

Wanting to take a break from big city life, Mel and her family headed west to Mudgee where Mel not only decided to re-locate but re-career, setting up Mudgee Floristry. Mel not only found her feet amongst the world of flowers but gave her children, especially her daughter Nat, a taste for the flowery bud.

Fourteen years later and following a holiday to Europe Mel and Nat were inspired by the beautiful European florists and their tiny little shops that had flowers spilling out on the street, and on moving to Newcastle they decided the time was right to find a space of their own. A coffee at Glee decided the location with a mini makeover taking place right next door and Blooms on Darby opening its doors.

When asked to describe their floristry style they both agree on a slightly more vintage approach. Drawn to unusual textures Nat said they love to work with varieties that are a little different and anything that captures their eye, however, they are always open to requests.

Living on the coast Mel said she is spoilt by the amazing open beaches that deliver a fantastic selection of driftwood, sticks and unique pieces that you just can’t get anywhere else. But of course their weekly trip to Sydney’s Flemington markets is where the bulk of their flowery loot is foraged from.

Mel and Nat have created an stunning floral space, however if you can’t drop in, Blooms on Darby deliver to pretty much anywhere across the Hunter, Maitland, Lake Macquarie and locally of course.

So now you have no excuse to either spoil your loved one, or yourself, with a big beautiful bunch of flowers today.
