Owners Tali and Jordan from Ground Floor Café on the mall, have gone down a level and opened a bar, and what else could they call it but the Basement. Just a stone's throw from Ground Floor Cafe, the Basement is next door to Three Bears off The Mall.

Basement on Market St, Newcastle bar & restaurant | HUNTERhunter

The Basement is a dark, sexy and sophisticated bar, limited to just sixty patrons at any one time, it's an intimate setting perfect for a date, a girl's night out or a long night of cocktails.

With outdoor seating open until 9pm, this venue will be perfect for catching a cool breeze on a hot summer's night with a cocktail, vino or beer in hand. The style inside the Basement is hard to describe, it's eclectic with exposed brick walls and steel beams complemented by dim candle lighting, cocktail style high tables, vines growing up the walls and chilled out beats. It exudes sophistication and style in a sexy urban setting.

There is an impressive cocktail list to select from including my favourite the Tea Infused Negroni - with house infused Blueberry Sencha Bombay Gin. Or try the Passionfruit Peacock with vodka, lychees and passionfruit - owner Tali insists that a sprinkle of chilli flakes works amazingly well with this sweet cocktail - and although it sounds bizarre I have to agree that it tastes delicious. You might notice Tali's obsession with chilli, with little containers of chillies on every table, who doesn't need chilli with every meal?

Enough about the drinks menu, they also have a terrific, and extensive, new tapas menu with lots of different options from Beef Carpaccio, through to house made Felafel and hummus. There is a Mediterranean feel to the menu thanks to their chef who has worked at some of the top restaurants in Israel. Our favourite was the Israeli Platter, perfect to share; we opted to have it with felafel and was accompanied with flatbread and eight different good!

So if you want to check out a sexy, sophisticated small bar, then the Basement on Market Street is a must.
