My experience on a radio reality dating show
If you’re a hit 106.9 listener, you might be around the fact that the radio station sent 6 singles to Bali last week on Blind DatesSee our handpicked guides to Newcastle
BY ALICIA POOLE
And one of those singles, was me! Alicia, or as others might know, #TheGirlNextDoor. We’re all familiar with the dating shows across our TV screens, but had you ever considered a dating show on radio? The team at hit 106.9 did and my god did they deliver.
In a nutshell, they were after six singles that would meet for the first time on the plane and head to Bali for a week of dating, drama and indulgent daquiris.
We were wined and dined across the Balinese coast, and may have indulged in a few massages here and there. Jetting off on single dates, myself (the Girl Next Door) with Josh (the Larrikin), Olympia (the Greek Goddess) with Brock (Mr Picky) and Hannah (The Fit Chick) with Matt (The Hippie Guy) were all to enjoy dating across Bali. From waterfalls to cooking classes to catpoo coffee to pottery classes; there was a lot going on!
Now, I have been to Bali before, but that was over 10 years ago! What took me for surprise, me was how much the place has transformed into a foodie paradise! Check out where we ate, where we drank and what we got to experience on our whirlwind week on Bali Blind Dates.
Where We Ate
Ulekan Bali | Canggu
Our first group dinner was at this hidden restaurant right off the beaten track, and right in the heart of the new foodie paradise of Bali. We all got to know each other over traditional Indonesian dishes combined with crafty cocktails.
Peekaboo | Canggu
When the head chef hails from Melbourne, you know you’re about to experience a good meal, and Peekaboo certainly delivered. Focusing on Asian street food classics with a twist of modern culinary techniques, Peekaboo was hands down my favourite restaurant! Order the BBQ Chilli prawns; you won’t be disappointed.
Kayu Bakar Berawa | Canggu
These guys went above and beyond for our final group dinner! Supplying a 5-course Bali Blind Dates themed menu, inclusive of a ‘tie-me-up’ cocktail. Small meals that packed a punch, Kayu Bakar Berawa is one to check out whilst in Canggu.
Where We Drank
La Brisa | Canggu
Nestled on the foreshore of Echo Beach, La Brisa is home to breathtaking, insta-worthy décor, sustainably sourced food and genuine Balinese hospitality. This insane beach bar is still laying low on the tourist scene, so get in and give this place a visit before it becomes old news!
La Laguna | Canggu
Located on the sands that border Berawa and Batu Belig, the Spanish inspired, boho-chic, gypsy beach club transports you to a mystical world like no other. Cobbled paths, vintage wooden gypsy caravans, eclectic interiors with multi-coloured furniture that leads down to the lagoon and onto the Bali shoreline. WHAT a beauty!
Mrs. Sippy | Seminyak
Heaven IS a place on earth! Mrs. Sippy is Bali’s largest saltwater pool and is bound to deliver good times day or night.
Finns | Canggu
The night of nights – Our final night in Bali and we really went out with a BANG. Hiring the space above the pool bar, we had views of the entire venue, the pool, the beach and most importantly, that sunset.
What We Did
VW Kombi Cocktail Safari
Run by the guys at Urban Adventures, we were cocktail hopping our way around Bali in some of the coolest Kombi’s you’ve ever seen. Cruising around in a modified 1980 VW Kombi complete with WIFI, mini bar, and even an aux cord. This was the best ice-breaker to get to know everyone!
Tegenungan Waterfall | Ubud
SO MANY STEPS. Visiting the Waterfall was the first stop on the scheduled ‘single date’ that I had with Josh, The Larrikin.
Bali Swing | Ubud
Every Instagram models dream. Safe to say none of us are exactly insta-model worthy, but the place was still awesome to check out nonetheless!
Blow Bar | Seminyak
Well, this place is something you wouldn’t expect to see in Bali. It’s a hairdresser, it’s a bar. Who was this insanely clever human that combined the two together!
A massive shout out to the crew that organised this insane adventure. Whilst we may have all walked out just as single as we did when we walked in, we did take away with us some incredible memories, some good friends and if you were unlucky, an extra kilo or two!
