One of our fav buildings in Newcastle has just had a makeover and reopened its doors, bringing with it an impressive collection of Whisky flavours alongside
a sophisticated cocktail menu and of course, taps and taps of craft beer.
Located on King St, Babylon sits within the spectacular old Methodist Mission building. This grand old dame, which was originally built in 1903, has been
home to a variety of businesses over the years including a theatre, fine diner, beer hall and now a sophisticated 1920’s inspired Whisky, Cocktail
and Craft Beer destination.
Brought to you by the team behind Beaumont Street's much loved craft beer bar, The Blind Monk, owner Phil Elsley said,
“We had been on the lookout for a new space for a while and when the opportunity to take on this venue became available we jumped at it straight away.”
“Babylon is a bit of everything and has something for everyone. Basically we’re wanting to have the best offering of everything, that being your craft beers, cocktails and a collection of whisky that is the biggest outside of Sydney”.
“Newcastle people seem to be getting into their whisky a lot more these days, The Blind Monk has a reasonable collection but we wanted to really up the
offering here, plus we enjoy drinking it so it made sense.”
If you haven’t visited the 145 King St venue for a while, you may have forgotten just how grand the space is and how there isn’t anything else like it
in Newcastle. From the spectacular chandeliers, tiered theatre style balcony, the moody interiors and luxe velvet edges, there’s a sophistication with
an approachable edge.
“We didn’t need to do a lot to the building, just a few cosmetic touches like the colours and lighting, the building speaks for itself really.”
Matching the extensive drinks menu is the food offering that’s all about sharing and being social. The small, large and after dark share plates will keep you more than satisfied and lingering long into the evening.
