The Lock-up | 8 Dec - 27 Jan
Argo Pacifico is not an exhibition. It is a real-life cruise ship that has been temporally and spatially phased into the walls of The Lock-UpSee our handpicked guides to Newcastle
This summer The Lock-Up will transform from an 18th-century police station into ARGO PACIFICO, a real-life carnival cruise ship, that is about to embark
on a voyage through the Bermuda Triangle. Embarked upon by Hunter-based artists Jen Denzin and Oliver Harlan, this ambitious and collaborative project
creates a fun, sublime and absurdly playful experience.
Unmooring itself from conventional exhibition display techniques, Denzin and Harlan reconfigure the original colonial site of The Lock-Up into the completely incongruent space of a first-class cruise boat. Hundreds of assemblages, including handmade cardboard palm trees, beaded chandeliers, fluorescent lobsters and sequined seafood are loaded into the space, allowing the guests on board the ship to let their imagination run wild within this immersive installation.
Pushing the concept of an exhibition to its limits, both artists have created a space that enables us to step outside our everyday lives. The Lock-Up Director Jessi England says,
“We are thrilled to have Jen Denzin and Oliver Harlan working collaboratively on this project. Jen has been making fantastic work for an extended period of time. We invited her to develop an exhibition for The Lock-Up and she came to us with the cruise ship idea. Seeing possibilities for extending this idea we introduced her to Oliver Harlan. The idea and subsequent collaboration between the artists have exploded into an incredible and immersive metamorphosis of The Lock-Up spaces, and a wonderful coming together of two outstanding creative minds.”
