Tradition, innovation, and a cellar door worth slowing down for

If you’ve spent any time sipping your way around the Hunter, you’ve probably heard whispers about Vinden Wines. And if you haven’t – this is your sign to change that.

Situated along Gillards Road in Pokolbin, Vinden Wines is the kind of place that makes you want to kick back, pour another glass, and stay longer than you planned.

Let’s start with the setting. The cellar door is bright, airy, and overlooks 13 acres of beautifully kept vines and gardens. It’s a little slice of vineyard heaven, complete with a relaxed, dog-friendly vibe and plenty of space to lounge (kids welcome too, if you're travelling with the whole crew). There’s no fuss here – just really good wine, good conversation, and a warm welcome that makes you feel more like a friend than a guest.

The man behind the label? Angus Vinden, a second-generation winemaker who’s been running the show since 2015.

He’s one of those rare types who manages to honour the roots of traditional winemaking while pushing creative boundaries.

You’ll find his classic Hunter style under the Vinden Wines label, and his more experimental drops under The Vinden Headcase –a project that’s as intriguing in taste as it is in concept.

Case in point: in 2020, Angus kicked off a self-portrait series for his Headcase Experimental Release. Each vintage gets a new image – just him, captured in time.

It’s deeply personal, wildly creative, and a brilliant way to bottle both wine and memory.

The wines themselves? Absolutely worth the hype. From hand-picked grapes to native yeasts and a whole range of fermentation vessels (oak, concrete, clay amphorae – this isn’t your average setup), every detail is considered. And while the processes might be technical, the result is simple: expressive, balanced wines with real personality.

The vineyards stretch across two distinct sites –Vinden Estate, established in 1990, and the historic Somerset vineyard with blocks dating back to the 1860s. It’s this mix of youthful energy and deep heritage that gives the wines their edge. Shiraz, Tempranillo, Chenin Blanc, Mourvedre, Gamay… the lineup is exciting, with some truly standout bottles.

Tastings are $15 and worth every cent. Walk-ins are welcome, but book ahead if you're planning to swing by on a weekend or during the holidays – it’s a popular spot for good reason.

And just before you start thinking about heading back home, there’s one more reason to linger: the Vinden Estate Homestead. Sitting right in the heart of the vineyard, this spacious six-bedroom property lets you roll straight from wine tasting to poolside lounging. It’s got all the comforts – big living spaces, a full kitchen, multiple outdoor spots to gather – and is just minutes from all the major Hunter highlights.

But honestly? Once you’re here, you may not want to leave at all.
