The Longhouse

Accommodation in the Hunter Valley that comes with a fascinating story

The Longhouse in the Hunter Valley is much more than just another accommodation property, it’s a stunning building that comes with a fascinating story.

The Longhouse project was initiated by Newcastle architecture students Jo and Dean, who decided to put their gap year to good use and transform their textbook studies into a real life project. With little opportunity during their uni days to actually create anything the duo were keen to get their hands dirty and put their knowledge to the test.

With a rather large project in mind Jo and Dean invited fellow architecture students, 70 in total, from universities around Australia and across the globe to get involved with the project. Encouraged by those in the industry, the students were taken under the wing of a team of engineers, builders and architects who together with the students created a spectacular 48 metre long building that incorporated a mixture of modern materials and recycled products to ensure a seamless fit with its surrounds.

Located down the very quiet Palmers Lane, each of the 3 units have two rooms and have been designed specifically for two couples in mind. Each unit takes full advantage of the vineyard and mountain views with floor to ceiling glass windows and a balcony that spans the whole 48 metre building length. It makes for the perfect sitting and sipping spot to watch the sun go down.

The industrial style design incorporates large corrugated steel sliding walls and glass doors that create an almost outdoor living experience together with cladding and flooring milled from an old woolshed in Western Australia. With so much air flow there’s little need for air con even on those hot vineyard days, an important feature with an environmentally responsive design solution being an integral part of the overall design.

Taking almost 18 months to complete the project was not only a resounding success but a truly rewarding experience for all involved and makes for the perfect place to spend your Hunter Valley getaway.
