When planning a day trip to the Hunter Valley the prospect of creating an itinerary can be a formidable task. With so much to see and so little time, Hunter Hunter recommends an excellent starting point being the Small Winemakers Centre.
Located on McDonald's Rd, in the heart of Pokolbin, the Small Winemakers Centre offers guests a unique cellar door experience with more than 26 local winemakers on display, including six of the Hunter Valley's leading winemakers: Thomas Wines, Margan, Keith Tulloch Wines, David Hook, The Little Wine Company and Hart & Hunter.
These winemakers, between them, have amassed more than 50 trophies and hundreds of medals over the years.
Over 30 varieties of wine are available for tasting. Whilst it's not encouraged to sample them all, Bron, the very attentive wine pourer, explains that the cellar door offers visitors the opportunity to experience a comprehensive range of some of the Hunter Valley's most outstanding wines, all under the one roof. Of course, your tasting choice can include the area's two most recognised varieties, Semillion and Shiraz. But, owner Suzanne Little, would encourage guests to mix it up a little and sample some of the Hunter Valley's emerging varieties, such as Vermentino, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Barbera.
With so many wines on offer, and Icon Lounge on the mezzanine level, a couple of hours must be pencilled in here.
