It was all smiles despite a chilly breeze at the very lovely Long Table lunch at Voco Kirkton Park yesterday. What was the first of many delightful long lunches to come, guests were treated to a delicious winter feast prepared thoughtfully with one of the Hunter Valley’s favourite wineries, Brokenwood.

Surrounded by towering gums at the front of the property with views of neighbouring vineyards and distant mountain ranges, Voco’s Long Table Lunch series is the latest food and wine indulgence to grace our beautiful valley, and aren’t we just a tad excited!

Kicking off in style, these amazing lunches will happen every month, featuring other well-known Hunter wineries and some surprisingly good, albeit less well known, boutique Hunter gems. The concept, a new take on a favourite pastime, is a salute to what the Hunter Valley does exceptionally well – showcasing the delicious regional fare prepared by talented Chefs and the distinctive province of fantastic wines in an idyllic, uniquely Hunter setting. A concept that voco has taken on to encourage Hunter Valley tourism and support local wineries, farmers and growers.

For this inaugural lunch, the Kirkton Park team have pulled out all stops. There’re gas heaters, fire pits and even some gorgeous knitted blankets to ensure everyone is warm and comfortable, ready to enjoy the delicious food and wine experience ahead. And, they didn’t disappoint.

As the lunch crowd filters in, the delightful 2019 Brokenwood Rosato Nebbiolo (a Beechworth beauty) is cracked and served alongside, perhaps one of the tastiest Arancini’s ever made and other equally delicious canapés. The mood is set and lunch guests mingle, chatting and admiring the views and the oh so smooth sounds of local and very talented musician, Jerome O’Connor.

As we sit down at the table and greet surrounding diners, the lunch and wines are briefly introduced before a host of sumptuous shared mains are served down the table with Brokenwood’s 2018 Semillon and 2017 Shiraz. Head Chef Prabhat Kumar Prawin has prepared a mouth-watering slow roasted beef striploin with fried kale and a muscat wine jus, dukkah spiced chicken thigh with glazed carrots and pan-fried Barramundi with sugar snap peas and a saffron velouté.

The accompanying side dishes are equally as divine. There’s a leafy tomato and bean salad, picked fresh from voco’s kitchen garden, beetroot and vegetable quinoa, roasted root vegetables and a potato lyonnaise that quite frankly, I could’ve devoured solo.

Sipping my savoury Hunter Shiraz and sampling each delicious share plate, all the while listening to Jerome’s soulful voice and making new friends, I’m in my happy place. The Kirkton Park staff are super attentive too, checking glasses are full and every guest need is accommodated. And just when I muse that it doesn’t get any better than this, the dessert wine, Brokenwood’s 2016 Sticky Wicket, is poured and the dessert table featuring an assortment of sweet morsels and tasty Hunter Belle cheeses is stocked. Cue unbuttoning jeans.
