The Levee

Check out the new Riverlink Building & River Walk

If you haven’t been to Maitland in a while then here’s a good reason to visit. Stage Two of the Levee revitalisation is now complete. What does that mean? Well, there is the new Riverlink Building, new Bourke Street Link and improved walkway along the river. And it looks amazing! It may all be new, but it has been built in a style that is sympathetic to the history of Maitland. It fits in so well.

The Riverlink Building is the new gateway joining the river to the shops along The Levee Shared Zone. It’s a very impressive piece of architecture, a grand structure which you simply can’t miss. Oh, and then there are the metallic clouds perched up on the roof and wall. These are the work of Newcastle sculptor, Braddon Snape, entitled ‘Clouds Gathering’. It references the Levee’s relationship and history with water and the Hunter River. And, they look really cool too.

The Bourke Street Link is also complete, down the southern end of the Levee. This connection between the shops and the riverside walk includes a ramp, making it disable friendly and good for the pram.

The revamped riverside walk includes outdoor seating, shaded tables and plenty of space for the kids to roam free. Bring their scooters or bicycles, so that can be doing laps of the Riverwalk whilst you enjoy a coffee and a chat. The banks of the Hunter River is a very peaceful place to relax and let the kids wear themselves out.
