Turn Christmas Shopping into a Day Out in Maitland This Year
Shopping for Christmas gifts sends chills down the bravest shopper’s spine. But what if we could help you with gift ideas that would support local Australian artists and it could all be done as part of an enjoyable day out. Surely this is a win on all fronts….sign me up!
Well, this week HUNTERhunter visited the Maitland Regional Art Gallery Shop which is located at the entrance of the Gallery on High St, Maitland.
The Gallery Shop is home to products created by local and regional artists like Kes Harper, Jo Herbert, Ellie Hannon and Oscar & Matilda (jewellery). Glass art from Kayo Yokoyama, Ruth Allen and Keith Rowe and textiles and scarves from Saretta Fielding, Edith Rewa and Kerry Shepherd.
Wandering around the shop I spied some fantastic book titles such as Ottelenghi’s Flavour, Growing up Aboriginal by Anita Heiss and lots of great cooking, craft and design books.
There are stunning one off pieces of jewellery and ceramics, gift ideas for animal lovers, kids and plant enthusiasts. There were even some secret santa gift ideas priced around the $15 mark if you’re looking for something a little more classy (and a whole less cringy) this year.
The beauty of heading to the Gallery Shop to pick up some of those Christmas gifts is that you can disguise the chore of Christmas shopping as a fun day out! Tie in a visit to the Gallery whilst you’re there - it is such a stunning space and hosts multiple exhibitions with free entry. And once you’ve got your spot of culture for the day, picked up a couple of unique Christmas gifts, you can then head into the cafe for a coffee or a bite to eat. The cafe, Seraphine, is located under the same roof and offers delicious breakfast, lunch and morning / afternoon tea options.
Hot tip, if you sign up to become a member of the Maitland Regional Art Gallery, you will receive 10% off in The Gallery Shop all year round - plus a few other perks such as access to exclusive events and more members only discounts. Free gift wrapping is also available.
So turn your Christmas shopping into a day out this year, all whilst supporting local artists.
