Wondering what’s on around Maitland this Summer? There is a whole program of events and activities to do which can be found online at My Maitland but here are some of the highlights so you can add them straight into your Google Calendar.

January 22 - 26, 2021: Summer Lights and Neon Nights at The Levee
The Levee will come alive with music, lights and activities, over the Australia Day long weekend.

Check out the Summer Lights projections across the Shared Zone by Illuminart from Friday January 22 until Australia Day Tuesday January 26, 2021. Light projections will feature on some of Maitland's iconic buildings including The Post Office, The Riverlink and 437 High Street (previously known as Taylors of Maitland).

The Levee

Neon Nights is the accompanying activation. Held over two nights on Friday January 22 and Saturday January 23, 2021 there will be fun activities like the little neon mini golf and retro video game. There will also be a DJ bringing all the Summer vibes, spinning the latest tunes and some classics too. It will be a great way to pass some time between cheeky cocktails from some of The Levee’s great night spots.

Thanks to the NSW Government Festival of Place – Summer Fund, the footprint of Neon Nights will be expanded to include activities at Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Maitland Library this year.

Bookings are not required, so come down and check out what’s on at The Levee this Australia Day.

January 1 - 31, 2021: Free Art Classes at Maitland Regional Art Gallery
MRAG is hosting a whole series of art making workshops with an activity on every day they are open throughout January. Activities include two sip and sketch classes with artists Rosie Turner and Lucas Grogan, animation workshops, talks, drawing stations and great exhibitions. There is something for all ages - kids and adults alike.

Activities will be facilitated by MRAG Art Tutors. Some activities are self directed with friendly assistance available and others are presented and active workshops.

Bookings essential for many of the activities, so check out the full program at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery website.

January 3 - 26, 2021: Historic Tiger Moth Flyovers
You can even enjoy some of Make it Maitland’s Summer activities from the comfort of your own home with the weekly flyovers of historic Tiger Moth aeroplanes.

Tiger moth fly over

Local Tiger Moth planes organised by the Royal Newcastle Aero Club will be taking to the skies on selected dates throughout January. These post war work horses are around 90 years old, and were used to train pilots for WW2. Watch them fly over various parts of the city between 10am and 10:30am. And for the finale, the planes will be doing a flyover over the entire city on Tuesday January 26 for Australia Day.

Flyovers are subject to flying conditions but check out when they are scheduled to be flying over your suburb.

Plus, for the chance to WIN A TIGER MOTH JOY FLIGHT on Australia Day 2021 with the Royal Newcastle Aero Club, take your best pic of the Tiger Moth flyover and post it to Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #MakeItMaitland. Don't forget to make your post public so we can see your hashtag. Make sure you follow My Maitland socials for more info how you could win.

January 6 - 31, 2021: Aqua Hire in Morpeth
There is nothing like keeping active whilst the weather is warm, so head down to Queens Wharf, Morpeth and hire a single or double kayak or stand up paddle board. It’s a great way to explore the calm waters of the Hunter River.

Aqua hire will be available from Wednesday through to Sunday each week in January and at just $5 per half hour - it is a cheap summer activity. And don’t worry life jackets for ages 3yrs and up are included in your hire.

To avoid disappointment, bookings are recommend online via My Maitland.

January 10 - February 26, 2021: Street Eats
Looking for something to eat or an idea for the family meal? Head down to one of six planned Street Eats and grab some food from one of these organised Food Truck get-togethers. Maitland City Council has scheduled them at various locations around Maitland.

Street Eats Maitland

The first one is on January 10 at Morpeth between 12pm and 3pm. Entry is free and no need to book tickets - just rock up and enjoy some lunch and some live music whilst perusing Morpeth Village.

Check out the other locations, dates and times on the My Maitland site.

January 12, 13 and 19, 2021: Scoop and Sketch
Another creative outlet available through the Make it Maitland this Summer initiative, is the Scoop and Sketch with Graham Davidson.
Recommended for all ages - children and adults can join in a drawing with pastels art activity.

Graham will showcase his popular Sketch Attack demonstration which will help extract those drawings out all imaginations and get you started on your very own sketch. One that I am sure will progress from the art gallery on your fridge, to its’ very own space on the wall!

Taking in the scenery of the local Maitland Region, Scoop and Sketch will be set up at three locations between 10am - 12pm on January 12, 13 and 19. There will also be free soft serve ice cream (*1 ice-cream per child, limited number available) and lawn games at this event to keep everyone happy.

January 28 - January 30, 2021: Dive in Cinema
One of our favourites is the return of the Dive In Cinema. Sitting back in a floating “armchair” on a hot summer evening is right up our alley!

Dive in Cinema Maitland Pool

The Dive In Cinema is hosted at East Maitland Aquatic Centre in the outdoor pool, with three sessions held on January 28, 29 and 30, 2021. All movies, quite fittingly, will be water themed with Free Willy, Moana and Finding Dory on the bill. There will also be food available via the Pool Kiosk or even bring your own picnic as there is plenty of space to chill out on the grassed area before the movie kicks off at 8pm. Arrive from 6pm to enjoy a swim and the other facilities such as volleyball and the popular floating obstacle course for the kids.

The dive in cinema is weather dependent but be sure to book in to secure a ticket. In pool tickets are $10 per person or you can rug up and watch the movie from the side-lines for $5 per ticket or no charge for kids under 2 years of age.

Maitland Pool Movies

A COVID safe plan will be in place for all events so don’t be lost with what to do this summer. Get out and see your local area with a range of activities to keep the whole crew entertained.
