A Weekend Full of Activities at This Year’s All New Maitland Taste Deconstructed

Maitland Taste is being ‘Deconstructed’, creatively pulled apart and served up in a different way in 2021. This year, Maitland Taste Deconstructed brings the community together in a broader way to ‘Grow, Create and Taste’. The program will include gourmet food and artisan markets, food trucks, cooking and gardening demonstrations, live music, kids activities and more.

Held over three days, from Friday 7 May through to Sunday 9 May, 2021, check out what’s on this year and where you can find all the action and activities throughout The Levee, Central Maitland.

What's On All Weekend
Market Stalls
When: Friday 7 May, 5pm - 10pm
          Saturday 8 May and Sunday 9 May, 10am - 3pm
Where: The Shared Zone (High Street between Burke and Elgin Streets)
Maitland Taste Deconstructed will host a range of market stalls throughout the Shared Zone, with each day of the event offering a different reason to pay a visit.

On Friday May 7 for the first time, Maitland Taste Deconstructed will trade into the night! The evening program will see the city come to life with vibrant, interactive lighting projections.

As you wander through the site, be sure to grab a bite to eat from the local restaurants and food trucks peppered throughout the Shared Zone whilst you take in the sounds of live music from talented local musicians.

On Saturday, 8 May there will be a range of local food stalls and food trucks so you can pick up a snack or something more hearty for lunch. And our favourite meal of the day, dessert, will also be covered if your sweet cravings turn up on the day. There will also be wine market stalls if you feel like tasting or purchasing some local vino. There will be cooking demonstrations to learn about different flavours and cooking techniques.

Sunday, 9 May food stalls and trucks plus the local Hunter Valley wines will be back but the team at Maitland Taste Deconstructed have added in a variety of ‘green’ stalls. These include plants, flowers and local produce.

The Meating Place
When: Friday 7 May 5pm – 10pm
          Saturday 8 May 11am – 10pm
          Sunday 9 May 11am – 3pm

And if you were after more food following a stroll through the markets, then make The Meating Place your next stop when exploring Maitland Taste Deconstructed this year.

There will be a variety of local BBQ food trucks setting up to create a BBQ lovers mecca and to tantalise your taste buds, including Smokin Hot n’ Saucy, Mr Shish and Sammy’s Tucker as well as GI Gourmet Nuts all serving it low and slow at this unique site operating from Friday to Sunday.

Get cozy around the fire pits throughout the night and enjoy live music from our talented local musicians while sipping on a delicious beverage from Foghorn Brewery or Newcastle Distilling Co. Check out the live music program for more info.

Kids Patch

The kids aren’t forgotten either - check out what's on for kids at Maitland Taste!

Kids Patch is a dedicated kid’s space in the Shared Zone offering a range of great activities suitable for kids of all ages.

Check out the walk through installations from Friday 5pm running right through the weekend. There will be giant colourful mushrooms to explore and the Butterfly Garden - a relaxing sensory experience. And on Friday and Saturday evenings, these will delight the family as they light up the night.

On Saturday, kids can enjoy decorating reusable calico bags with the Girl Guides with their own creative paintings.

On Sunday, Join Farmer Jesse from Phoenix Park Farm who will be on site to run the seedling workshops.

There will also be a number of play kitchens there all weekend for the little ones to play in and test out their own cooking skills.

All activities are free to take part in and will be located at the Eastern end of The Shared Zone next to our Butterfly Garden for all families to enjoy.

You can’t have food and drinks without live music to complete the atmosphere. Located at four different locations across The Levee, check out some of the region’s greatest up and coming independent performers.

Walk Through Installations

Where: The Shared Zone
Check out the big and bold immersive mushroom installation by Amigo & Amigo. These beautiful artworks are a colourful spectacle by day and an illuminated display by night. You will find them at the western end of the Shared Zone.

There will also be another beautiful installation, the Butterfly Garden designed by sensory artist Dr Bliss Cavanagh. The garden has been designed to facilitate relaxation and reduce stress. Walk through and hang out in this one to bring on some chill time. The Butterfly Garden will be located at the eastern end of The Shared Zone.

 

What's On This Friday and Saturday Night
The Laneway Bar
When: Friday 7 May and Saturday 8 May 5pm – 10pm
Where: Coffin Lane (near the intersection of Bourke Street)
The Laneway Bar is one of the many pop up eateries throughout The Levee precinct during Maitland Taste Deconstructed.

Open on Friday and Saturday nights only, The Farmer’s Wife Gin Distillery will be serving up their delicious gin alongside Taco Locato cooking up some tasty Mexican food.

Grab a seat, sip some gin and chow down on Mexican food as you listen to the live music from local musos. Check out the live music program for all the music set times.

Mezze Beats
When: Friday 7 May and Saturday 8 May 5pm – 10pm
Where: Turner Rest Park
Mezze Beats will be a Mediterranean fiesta with food, music, colour and lights!

Come along on Friday and Saturday night only to enjoy dinner and the disco beats from International DJ, Perry Carter. Check out the live music program for all the music set times.

Lighting Installation and Projections
When: Friday 7 May and Saturday 8 May 5pm – 10pm
Where: The Shared Zone
In a first, Maitland Taste Deconstructed will trade into the night! The evening program will see the city come to life with vibrant, interactive lighting sculptures and projections located throughout The Levee precinct. The giant mushrooms by Amigo & Amigo will be illuminated, as will the Butterfly Garden and the walls of The Riverlink bathed in light by Sydney projectionist Illuminart.

Cooking Demonstrations
When: Saturday May 8, 10am - 3pm
Where: The Shared Zone
There will be a range of cooking demonstrations on Saturday 8 May which are the perfect opportunity to learn about cooking from paddock to plate, using different cooking styles and techniques and learn about different flavours in food.

This year, there will be a range of presenters and local home chefs that will take the stage to teach you their tips and tricks about cooking with delicious fresh produce.

Floral Installation
When: Sunday 9 May, 10am - 3pm
Where: The Shared Zone
Hunter Design School floristry students have been busy preparing for Mother’s Day at Maitland Taste Deconstructed. There will be a beautiful floral installation located in The Riverlink so you can snap a photo to celebrate your mum and other loved ones.

And if you wanted to spoil mum a bit more the Hunter Design School students will also be selling floral bouquets in the Shared Zone.

Garden Demonstrations
When: Sunday 9 May, 10am - 3pm
Where: The Shared Zone
There will be a range of Garden Demonstrations from permaculture ethics, designing productive backyards, integrated pest management and more!

Purple Pear Farm, a small peri-urban local farm, will be hosting the Garden Stage this year. They will be joined by Maplewood Permaculture and Slow Food Hunter Valley to deliver each of the demonstrations that will be on offer throughout the day.

Get up Close with the Bees

When: Sunday 9 May, 10am - 3pm
Where: The Shared Zone
Heather’s Honey and Hives will be back at Maitland Taste Deconstructed for 2021 along with their Beezeebo. The Beezeebo is a chance for the public to get a close up view of a functioning bee hive without the need for a bee veil or other protective equipment.

There will also be talks hosted by Barry Vickery, Heather Wightman and Geoff Wightman at 11.00am and 1.00pm come along and all about:

  • A bees role/function in the hive
  • Honeybee lifecycle
  • Importance of pollination to crops
  • Why honey comes in different colours and tastes from the local area
  • Other uses for bee related products
