Check out Cessnock’s hole-in-the-wall coffee joint
Craving a seriously good cup of coffee in Cessnock? Head down to Greg’s Espresso Bar to get your caffeine hit, and whilst you’re there, indulge in some of their delicious toasties, brownies, and more.
The power couple behind the bustling café is Oonagh and Greg. The couple met whilst they were working at a café in Bathurst. Finding both love and their perfect coffee blend, the pair then took their coffee endeavours up to the Hunter Valley and opened Greg’s Espresso Bar in 2018.
What is the secret behind their wonderful coffees, you ask? We got Oonagh to spill the beans. Their blend is from Fish River Roasters, a boutique coffee roasting company based in Bathurst. It’s the same blend Greg and Oonagh have been using since they first met.
“Greg and I have made this coffee together for ages and it’s the coffee we had at our wedding,” Oonagh reminisced.
Over the years, Greg’s has received a lot of support from the locals, who look forward to seeing the friendly faces of the staff. Greg and Oonagh have also changed the space a couple of times and are constantly brimming with new ideas for the café.
“Next year we might do a renovation to bring the coffee machine forward for the baristas so that everyone can enjoy the theatre of coffee-making.”
With a focus on simple, grab-and-go foods, the menu at Greg’s offers an array of toasties, wraps, and sweet treats. Greg’s has got you covered for your quick pre-work brekkie, lunchtime snack, and even just that sneaky why-not muffin.
Many of the ingredients at Greg’s, like the pesto and relish, are made from scratch. The menu also features some funky specials which change every week. Some of the café’s bestsellers include the Greggy Roll, the Pesto Chicken Toastie, and the Roast Cauli Wrap. The Reuben toastie, however, is a firm favourite, and also Oonagh’s pick.
The team at Greg’s enjoys experimenting with their toasties, adding their own touch, inspired by places they've travelled. For Oonagh, Greg’s is nostalgic of her childhood in Scotland and the bakery she used to frequent, which was also named Greg’s.
Greg’s is always up for an early morning, churning out coffees in the sunrise seven days a week! Whether you’re an early bird or late riser, you’re bound to love Greg’s Espresso Bar… and maybe in the near future, their pop-up in Pokolbin!
