A unique place to stop for a drink, a bite to eat and listen to some country tunes
The Great North Trading Post (GNTP), also known as the Laguna Wine Bar, is located in the little country town of Laguna, about 10 minutes drive outside of Wollombi. For those travelling on the Great North Road from Sydney, Laguna is actually the gateway to the Hunter Valley.
There’s not much that the GNTP doesn't do. For locals it’s where they get their petrol, do a spot of grocery shopping, come for a feed, a drink, their entertainment, ice and gas, there’s even a bed if they can’t quite manage to get home.
The Great North Trading Post is simply a great place to drop in for a bite to eat and an ice cold one.
It's best described as being one of those good old fashioned country style pubs that you would expect to find in outback Australia. You won’t find any slick or shiny fitouts, instead a rustic looking shed that looks like it could tell a story or two. There’s a beautifully built old wooden bar that actually doubles as a bottle shop and grocery store, even a games room out the back complete with pool table and juke box.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week the menu is a collection of tasty, and a little bit fancy pub grub. Like the Pulled Pork Slider with coleslaw and greens on a brioche bun or the Steak Frite with café De Paris Butter and the Amazing Pork Bomb.
If you happen to be in the area on a Friday afternoon stick around for the entertainment in the purpose built band room that’s had the likes of Kasey Chambers take to the stage.
If you’re heading up to the Hunter Valley take be sure to drop in for a beer or two at the GNTP.
