If Goons Brewing had a motto it would be “have a crack” as that’s exactly what friends and founders Tim, Alex, and Tom did when they ventured into craft brewing, but little did they know they’d be selling out across the Central Coast in their first six months.

What started as an idea over a beer on a surf trip, is now a local brew operation stocking 8 independent bottle shops, numerous cafes, and bars, and featured on tap at The Entrance Social Club.

“We can’t make enough, it hits the shelves and sells out,” says co-founder Tim, also behind the popular local hangout Flour & Co coffee shop and bakery in Toowoon Bay.

“I created this thing called Goons of Toowoon kind of like a side gig, to create a vibe in the area. Our mate Trent Whitehead did the art and we made tees and car stickers. The name is a bit silly and goofy, it’s that Aussie idea of just having a crack, and that’s what we did.”

Goons began as a nano-brewery for 12 months out of a home garage setup before growing into its current “gypsy-brewery” status where the guys collaborate with established brewers to learn from them whilst using their technical setup.

Tim saw the opportunity to extend the community built through Flour & Co and to offer their customers something else. So far, the Goons selection includes their first release, the Not Bad (Aussie) Lager, the ‘Good Thanks’ Japanese Rice Lager, and a soon-to-be-released Pale Ale.

The response from the community has been outstanding not only from customers but other local businesses who are supporting Goons Brewing such as Upstairs Wines, The Entrance Social Club, Tropicana Social Club, Kims Beachside Retreat, and Box on The Water Ettalong (to name just a few - see a full list of stockists below).

“We see the consumer market going back to local and believe the future of beer is local brews. We are Central Coast proud and aren’t out here to take over the country, but be the beer of choice in the region.”

A post on the Goons Brewing Instagram page summed up their philosophy and the drive behind what they create…

“It really confirmed that just like us, you love supporting locals. So, when you spend your hard-earned this week, just think about where that money ends up. Does it flow and circulate through your community? There are so many great businesses on the Central Coast and the more we support them, the more those businesses can put back into our local towns.”

As the three Goons continue to brew around Toowoon, their sights are set on a vision for their own brewery, with a community garden, more space to come together, and collaborations on events and popups to create more community spirit.
