The Joker and Thief

Chilled beach vibes during the day merge into “Mad Men” style late-night drinking in the evenings.

Terrigal has come a long way from its two options of The Terrigal Pub and Crowne Plaza’s Key Largo Nightclub or “The Beery” throughout the 90’s and 00’s. A whole new social landscape is forming in this bustling sea-side village and The Joker and Thief is the newest recruit, opening in mid-October last year.

Think chilled beach vibes during the days for brunch, merging into “Mad Men” style, premium late-night drinking in the evenings – this place has it all.

Situated in the old Hog’s Breath Café location, on the first floor above Fishbonez Takeaway, you will not recognise the new look bar and restaurant which has been designed by Fabric Architecture, Synergy Construction and interiors and styling by Stewart & Highfield.

On entry you’re transported into completely new atmosphere, off the beaten track of the busy Terrigal esplanade, straight to one of the best back bars Terrigal has to offer.

Business Development Manager for the venue, Syl Freedman says there’s nothing quite like The Joker & Thief in Terrigal, if not the coast.

“You won’t find a combination like this anywhere around here, with the world class cocktail bar merged with a premium restaurant, as well as somewhere our patrons can continue to enjoy their night with some live music and entertainment,” said Freedman.

The Joker and Thief is the creation of a multiple-party partnership, headed up by Terrigal locals Joel Singles and John Bishop. The bar and restaurant represents their first major foray into the hospitality scene, with the backing of some esteemed and experienced industry professionals.

The menu, driven by Head Chef, Dane Walker, is relaxed but of high quality, sourcing many ingredients locally from the likes of Darron’s Seafood. The star of the show has to be the prawn linguini, as well as the gnocchi and the eye fillet. If you’re dining for two, we highly recommend sharing the gnocchi and eye fillet as a great mix of flavours.

The back bar has a solid skew towards gin, followed by tequila. If you’re after gin in Terrigal, there’s no better place to go. There’s also an impressive array of Japanese whiskies, craft beers and premium wines.

According to Bar Manager, Josh Goon, the bar is big on its sustainable and artisan brands to help create the best drinking experiences for patrons.

“We’ve got a beautiful 78 Degrees Dry Gin which is produced at a sustainable distillery in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. Everything we do here is about quality, not quantity,” said Goon.

“The night scene in Terrigal in general has moved into a completely different category from where it used to be. Go anywhere around here and you’re going to find the best espresso martinis in the state. We’re all working really hard to take the coast bar scene to the next level,” he said.

If you see straws in the drinks at the bar, don’t freak out, The Joker and Thief use biodegradable straws, so you can drink on, guilt-free.

The venue does a monthly Bottomless Bellini promotion on the first Saturday of every month. For $55, you get an entrée and main, as well as the unlimited bellinis, which represents some great value for a lunch out with the girls or catching up with friends.

The Joker & Thief are also hosting monthly degustations with selected drinks suppliers, such as paired Japanese whiskies and meals, followed by a presentation from the brand’s head distiller, brewer or sommelier. The next dinner will showcase Nashdale Lane Wine on Thursday, 23 April 2020.
