Sundae Sesh

You scream, I scream, we all scream for Ice Cream!

Did anyone else realise that the Peninsula of the Central Coast did not have a purpose-built ice cream shop – till now! Jonica and Clint Williams lived on the peninsula for two years waiting for an ice cream shop to open before Jonica made the decision to fill the gap herself. We are glad she did, the gap is now filled with delicious 100% dairy Serendipity ice cream, unicorn bowls, moreish sundaes, and SPIDERS!

When you meet Jonica her energy is infectious, so it is easy to believe the story that when the space became available, she secured the location THEN rang Clint to let him know! “Clint was used to it, it’s the same way I bought the house. We were camping here, and he was away for work and I just got the house,” it is safe to say these two can pull things together quickly, all with 4 kids at home.

When they finally got the space, within 3 weeks they had completely renovated it with fun, bright & most Instagramable walls and fittings “we wanted somewhere fun for the mini-influencers to get their photos taken,” Jonica explains, the shop was named, and ice cream supplier anointed. I say anointed as Jonica did not stumble upon Serendipity by chance, she was looking for something special.

“We decided we wanted ice cream instead of gelato as it’s more of a luxurious product - it's cream, it’s made with real dairy. The cows used for our product are here in NSW. Super fresh and local. We wanted it to be a really, really good product. Rather than another ice cream you can get anywhere. We wanted it to be something special.”

When the doors swung open that first Friday, the line was around the corner – literally! Jonica explains, “We ran out of ice cream our first weekend opened. When they (Serendipity Ice-cream) did their first delivery and said that will last you for a few weeks and we will see how you go, we never imagined we’d go through this much!”

By the Sunday they were calling Serendipity saying they needed more stock and had to close the Monday to replenish supplies. The current best-sellers are Cookies and Cream and Death by Chocolate. With 4-5 new flavours coming in each week out of Serendipity’s range of 240+ flavours, it may take a few visits to try them all (we’re not complaining about that).

With a name like Sundae Sesh, you are right to assume they serve Sundaes. Jonica is the mastermind behind these creations, “The sundaes are designed with adults in mind,” she starts, “The Cereal Killer, Netflix & Chill, and Hey Shorty have no lashing of strawberry sauce, sugary lollies, or fluoro colours – these are indulgent. They are yummy and addictive. We have our regulars already who know what they like.”

There is a Sundae special every Sunday too and you can create your own.

Other items you will find here is a Spider (also known as an Ice cream float). The childhood nostalgia was real when we saw the can of creaming soda poured over that creamy perfect scoop of vanilla ice cream. To the team's surprise they are “more popular than we thought – with the hot weather they have been flying out the door.”

On the healthier side, they are serving Unicorn bowls, “frozen fruit that we whizz up with a little bit of coconut milk. They have the consistency of ice cream.”

These are served in half coconuts and a great-tasting and looking treat. You will find a savoury pop-up here too, be it a collaboration with another local business or hot dogs, there is always something new to try.

At the heart of Sundae Sesh is a family that’s part of the local community, with two 4-year-olds in daycare and two high school-aged children they wanted to be able to create opportunity in the community for first-time job seekers including employing their own two!

Jonica expresses her love and gratitude for her coastal home, “We lived in various parts of Sydney for 10 years and never really had a community feel. Here almost immediately we felt such a community spirit and neighbourly friendship.”

It’s kind of great they have now created the perfect place to bring the community together for a Sunday Sesh!
