Quality coffee, freshly-made pastries and a build your own breakfast
A trip to East Gosford on the Central Coast just didn't happen unless your visit included a stop at Ooomph for a coffee and bite to eat.
Co-owners Andrew Endfield and Markus Kunz have long had the reputation for consistently delivering quality coffee and delicious eats to East Gosford locals with Ooomph long being known as a café must-stop on the Coast, but things didn’t always run like this with Andrew explaining,
Our first foray into food at Ooomph, some 15 years ago, was supplying organic fruit and vegetables, meat and grocery products which was a real struggle. We found it difficult to make money out of just groceries, so we decided to put a coffee machine in and within just 12 months it took over the business.
Perfectly positioned on Gumtree Lane, behind East Gosford’s busy York St, Ooomph provides a quiet retreat for locals to either dash in and collect their morning coffee, dine in on the loungy green chairs, or for those with time on their hand move across the lane, pull up a barstool and take your time in the café garden area.
Along with their coffee Ooomph is also renowned for their delicious eats and those build-your-own-breakfasts.
“Not long after we brought in the coffee we introduced bacon and egg rolls using organic sourdough, pancetta and these little free-range eggs and people loved them. It was a bit of a light bulb moment that people don’t always want a huge breakfast and it allowed us to keep the price point as affordable as possible, that’s when Ooomph became much more of a café.”
“We have evolved quite a lot since then, our menu is now open to you ordering anything you want, however you want your eggs, add whatever sauce. You can literally build whatever breakfast you want. Some people order everything off the menu so they end up paying nearly $50 for their breakfast, which is crazy.”
In addition to the build-your-own-breakfast Ooomph offers an extensive menu that has everything from Warm Quinoa Porridge, to Coconut Panacotta, Acai Chia Pudding, Smoothie Bowls, Toasties and Burgers of all varieties, and… let's not forget those Pastries that we were introduced to at Andrew and Markus’ newest venture, Bouffant in Gosford.
“Five years ago Markus, our patisserie chef, came out to Australia from Spain with a friend who had a wholesale macron business and Marcus was helping him grow the business. At the time Markus worked with us for about a month, however when the macron business didn’t work Markus returned to Spain. Then four years ago he messaged me, out of the blue saying he wanted to come back to Australia.”
Not big enough to support a pastry chef of Markus’ quality, it was a risky decision but one that Andrew decided was worth the gamble.
“Markus then came to me with the idea for Bouffant, which is based on the same concept as the hugely popular Spanish bakery, Granier, whose owner mastered the formula of crafting quality pastries at an affordable price.”
“Ooomph became the testing ground for that concept, and now that’s going crazy. All of the pastries are made here in the Ooomph kitchen and delivered to each of our sites so it’s become a very busy little kitchen.
There’s a lot to love about Ooomph, the coffee, the food, those pastries, Andrew’s effervescent attitude to life and work - that being that you should always just have fun in whatever you do.
If you’re a local then you’ll be all over Ooomph, for those a little further afield we highly recommend jumping in your car and taking a drive to East Gosford.
