Mex-Americana has landed in Merewether
When did you last have a drink or something to eat at The Prince Hotel in Merewether?See our handpicked guides to Newcastle
It may not have been high on your list of must-visits venues in recent years, however, with the team that have brought you those awesome steaks at The Burwood and equally awesome burgers at RASCAL behind this little beast, things are a changing. One room at a time.
When the team moved in, first on the list of things to change was the menu. In came TWO MULES. Best described as Mex-Americana style restaurant Chef Brendhan is heading up the kitchen. Formerly of Surly’s in Surry Hills, Brendhan is combining his American BBQ & Burger experience together with his love for Mexican food to bring you something in between.
Brendhan said, ‘I’ve travelled a lot through Central America I just loved it the foods so fresh’. ‘Whilst I am not versed in Mexican cooking, it is one of my favourite things to eat so I did know a little bit about it. I actually came to Australia to do American BBQ’s, smoked meats, that’s my forte. That’s what I was doing in Sydney at Surly’s, but after four years I had to get out, I didn’t move to Australia to live in Sydney I wanted to live in a place like this. I am glad I did it, it was a great place but not somewhere I wanted to stay in forever.’
Whilst the menu does feature a lot of Mexican inspired dishes Brendhan has been allowed to keep a few burgers and a snitty on the menu ‘but it’s not your ordinary schnitzel’.
‘I actually cook the schnitzels like I used to cook my Southern Fried Chicken at Surly’s. Soaking in buttermilk for twenty-four hours.’
‘I love to do different things, the whole fitting out of the restaurant was a challenge, getting the kitchen organised to handle all the prep involved. Good Mexican food is all about using fresh produce so we make everything each morning like the avocado and the Pic de gallo sauce.’
You’ll also notice a pretty big change in décor, owner Ty said, ‘we just wanted to have a bit of fun with the space, we’re not trying to sell an authentic
Mexican experience it’s more about having some fun’.
There’s also a new look bar menu that of course involved Tequila! Yes, the bar menu has had a shake up with Tequila being the key ingredient.
You could go either way with TWO MULES, either drop in for a quick burrito or settle in for the afternoon/evening with one of those Gringo Bowls and a
truckload of Tequila.
