Newcastle’s favourite fried chicken joint has officially opened its pop-up diner

After five years of trading within The Newcastle Hotel, Newy Fried Chicken has officially spread its wings, opening their new pop-up American-style diner in Broadmeadow.

Owner, Nic Brady, continues to bring locals the best-fried chicken in Newcastle, and from late October, the cult-like food favourite is being dished out from a newly renovated space, housed within what some might remember as the former Anchor’s Seafood spot.

“I was laying in bed and was thinking where can we go? Anchor Seafood literally just came to me. I knew that this space had been empty for years.

“I had my first job at Anchor’s Seafood when I was 17. I was the Anchor Seafood lobster, who used to stand out the front on Lambton Road and dance around. I would be wearing tight orange lycra on 40-degree days. It was just diabolical,” Nic said.

Driving along Lambton Road, you’ve got your fast-food picks from the Golden Arches, KFC, Hungry Jacks, and Subway – but the legends behind Newy Fried Chicken are not only offering tastier food but an unparalleled dining experience.

“The main thing for us is offering an experience that matches the quality of the food.”

The fit-out can only be described as a retro American diner oozing with second-hand signature pieces, all of which tell a story or two.

“I am the self-proclaimed Facebook Marketplace king. I started getting on the grind on there and am really proud of what we found. I would say nearly 80% of the things in this space have been sourced from Facebook Marketplace. Not only are we reducing waste, but it’s also just a really retro feel and there is a story behind everything.”

From the street, your gaze is directed straight to the bright red ‘Newy Fried Chicken – Pop-Up Diner’ signage. But hang on, is it just going to be a pop-up?

As a matter of fact, it is temporary, because the site area is set for demolition. Don’t worry, it's not until 2025, so you’ve got PLENTY of time to enjoy Newy Fried Chicken in Broadmeadow.

Whilst we’re big fans of the menu here at HUNTERhunter, for those of you yet to join the NFC fan club, let us take you on a little foodie journey of what to expect.

Inspired by the sweet and spicy southern flavours of Nashville, Tennessee, each piece of chicken is brined for 24 hours to develop the flavour, before being smothered in rich buttermilk, twice dusted with flour, and fried until perfectly golden.

Treat yourself to a serving of tenders or wings with your choice of heat. Browse the five selections of sandos, order a round of chicken and waffles, or load up with sides.

“No menu changes as of yet. We’ll maintain the same menu that we had at The Newy for now. We will look at making some extra add-ons as time goes on. Eventually, I’d like to offer milkshakes to suit that diner vibe. If we’re going to do milkshakes, I feel like we should do boozy milkshakes too.”

Love diving headfirst into a foodie challenge? Nic is asking if you can handle the heat with the Newy Fried Hot Wing Challenge. What’s involved? Smash it and you’ll make it onto their Wall of Fame. Can’t quite handle the heat?  You’ll be roasted and chucked on the Wall of Shame conveniently located in the toilet.

A first for Newy Fried Chicken, Nic, and the team will be offering alcohol alongside their food menu.

“We’ve got two taps going. One will be our own brand of lager, and the other will be a rotating tap and will probably start as cider and then move into a seltzer or ginger beer. Then we’ve local craft brewery cans from Shout, Method, and Good Folk. We’ve also got Doom Juice wines.”

Now open seven days a week, and with big plans for the future including Superbowl parties, industry nights, and menu additions – we can’t wait to see Newy Fried Chicken move into their next era.
