DiRoma Pizzeria

Modern authentic Italian on Glebe Road, Merewether

A takeaway, fast casual pizzeria with the option of BYO, free of charge.

If you have driven along Glebe Road recently you might have spotted a new little pizzeria on the corner called DiRoma. As a self-confessed pizza enthusiast, it shot straight to the top of my new-things-to-try-in-Newcastle list.

And I am here to tell you it did not disappoint. Think 4 Formaggi with a Crème Fraiche base, Italian buffalo mozzarella, gorgonzola dolce, feta and grated parmigiano. Classic margarita pizza, pastas, plus dessert such as a Nutella pizza...YUM!

When I think authentic Italian pizza I think a classic Neapolitan pizza. However, the owner of DiRoma, Riccardo, explains that this is not necessarily the case.

“… it is just because it is the most promoted. Where I come from, Italy is divided into three- North, Centre and South. I am from the North and I have never had the pizza from the South. People from the South are like ‘no no the real pizza is this’, so this is a conflict.

"So we say, he (his business partner) is from the South, I’m from the North, why don’t we do a combination? So we joined the base and the toppings and we do a Roman style, the right balance."

Besides the name DiRoma being his business partner's family name, DiRoma means ‘from Rome’ which adds to this idea of the perfect balanced pizza from the middle of Italy.

Having previously owned pizza businesses in Sydney and Forster, Riccardo has now settled in Newcastle, the perfect in-between city. And since its opening a little over a week ago Novocastrians have been keeping them hot on their feet!
